It was a journey from the hardships of Kambuga Village to her role as an inspirational figure at Nyaka nothing short of remarkable.
Brenda was born in a world covered by the devastating grip of HIV/AIDS with her early years filled with loss and struggle. At just seven years old, she bid farewell to her mother, becoming one of 15 grandchildren under her grandmother’s care. Life in their cramped household, where basic needs were often a luxury, was a daily battle. Yet, amidst the hardship, Brenda had hope in her heart.
The turning point came when Brenda heard of a new found school offering free education to orphans in Kambuga village. Gathering her courage, she walked to Nyaka Primary School, determined to secure her place in the school. With fate on her side, the first person to speak to was the school principal who recognized Brenda’s resilience and spirit.
This began Brenda’s journey, navigating the hurdles of family responsibilities and poverty while pursuing her education. Despite the exhausting routine of house chores, digging in gardens every morning and long walks to get water and firewood after school, Brenda found solace in going to school. Guided by her teacher’s words
“Nyaka is like a bus; stay on it till you reach your destination. If you drop off before your arrival time, you will miss your destination” she persevered, driven by the desire to break the cycle of hardship for her family.
With unwavering determination, Brenda went beyond the confines of her upbringing. From primary school to university, she defied the odds, driven by the unwavering support of Nyaka. On attaining a Bachelor’s degree of Arts in Education, she embarked on a mission to empower others through teaching, first as an English teacher in Rwanda and Tanzania and later as a living testament of success within her community. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unexpected end to her job in Rwanda, but Brenda’s resilience remained unshaken. She transitioned from teaching to managing a car wash business, she embraced each opportunity. And when a Project Manager job opening at Nyaka came, Brenda seized it.
Today, Brenda stands as proof to the transformative power of education and compassion. Her story, wrapped with sacrifice and triumph, echoes beyond the borders of Kambuga Village, inspiring countless others to dream big and create change. With tears filling her eyes, Brenda extends her heartfelt gratitude to the generous supporters of Nyaka.
“I can never express enough gratitude to those who have provided unending support to me and countless others, giving us purpose and hope in life, I can only do the same and give back,” she says. “You have become the parents and providers we never had. Truly, you are angels sent from heaven.”
Brenda passionately urges Nyaka supporters to persist in their noble work, emphasizing the transformative impact they have on the lives of individuals like herself, bringing hope and opportunity to Uganda’s rural communities.
