Meet Akampurira Naume, a 23-year-old single mother with one child, residing in Kambuga Subcounty in Kanungu District.

After a long struggle to make ends meet for her and her child, Akampurira got some funds and started a tailoring business. She was soon identified by the Nyaka SGBV team as a qualifying beneficiary to participate in a three-month agri-BTVET training, where she gained essential skills in budgeting and saving. These training sessions also provided her with valuable knowledge to manage her businesses and plan for the future. After each of the training sessions, she would use the transport refund money to purchase charcoal and pack it in small polythene bags for sale and she made it her business.

Akampurira was among the lucky beneficiaries of the UNFCU project, receiving a starter fund of 400,000 UGX, which she used to start a retail shop. From this shop, she generates 40,000 UGX daily. In addition to managing her retail shop, Akampurira runs a tailoring and charcoal business, which provides her with extra income. The combined earnings from these ventures have allowed her to meet the needs of her child and improve her overall well-being.

“Before, I didn’t know how I would survive with my child. But today, I feel empowered. I can earn, I can save, and I can dream bigger for our future,” says Akampurira with pride.
