Nyaka’s Resilient Livelihoods & Community Power strengthens grandmother-led households and rural communities to care for children with dignity and independence. Through the Grandmothers Program, 261 community groups support 23,000+ grandmothers through savings, enterprise, mutual care, and local advocacy, helping household incomes rise above the extreme-poverty line. The Farm & Forestry Program builds food security, income and climate resilience through sustainable farming and tree planting, including food supplied to Nyaka schools to sustain daily meals for students.

Our Grandmother Program and Farm & Forestry Program contributes to the realization of these UN Sustainable Development Goals

Grandmother (Community Care & Economic Strengthening)

Nyaka’s Grandmothers Program organises these women into community-led groups where they support one another through shared care, savings, micro-enterprise, home improvements, and local advocacy. Since the programme launched in 2007 with 93 groups, it has grown to 261 groups, reaching 23,376 grandmothers and the 92,148 children in their care. The economic transformation is measurable, with an average daily household income having grown from $1.06 at the 2016 baseline to $3.67, crossing the international extreme poverty line.

Beyond structural improvements, we provide household items, agricultural equipment like hoes to increase food production, and washbasins to improve hygiene and decrease illness.

Farm & Forestry

Nyaka’s Farm & Forestry Program supplies the school kitchen with energy and foodstuffs, sustaining a 100% meals-at-school rate among Nyaka students, 46 percentage points above comparable schools in the region. This is climate-smart community development: practical, locally-led, and designed to show that rural communities can be primary actors in shaping their own economic and environmental future.
